Sustainable Energy Efforts of AEMAS and PSME

Energy today encompasses more and more, most of human activity, and is a factor that presently makes living pleasurable. It can also be a cause of great difficulty if it becomes scarce or unavailable. This is why it is necessary to seriously embrace the effort to rationalize and make sustainable both its source and usage.

There are currently numerous major worldwide initiatives in the rationalization of, and making sustainable, energy; among them the shift to renewable sources (from the finite hydrocarbon sources predominant today), and the reduction of one’s carbon footprint.

Here, in our country, various groups from the government and the private sectors are involved in such initiatives, and one of them is the Asean Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS) – a project funded by the European Union (EU) Switch-Asia Programme, in partnership with the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE) and Energy Efficiency Practitioners Association of the Philippines (ENPAP), Inc. and in coordination with the Department of Energy (DOE).

In March this year, AEMAS trained and certified 25 Energy Management Trainers, who recently conducted their first AEMAS Training Course for Energy Managers. This three day training, held last May 16-18 in one of the hotels in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, had 24 pre-qualified participants from 22 companies. The passers of the exam given at the end of the training session shall qualify as AEMAS Certified Energy Managers (CEM) and shall receive their certificates, as such, during the Energy Conference and launching of AEMAS Philippines on June 22-23 in one of the hotels in Makati City. As CEMs they will be capable of setting up and implementing a sustainable energy management system which covers the following tasks: a) Evaluation of an organization’s energy management status, b) Organization of an Energy management System (EMS), c) Implementation of the EMS, particularly the energy conservation measures, and d) The integration of the EMS into the business practices of the organization.

Among the companies represented in the first course are the following: Amkor Technology, Texas Instrument, ST Microelectronics, San Miguel Yamamura, Unilever, OSP Honeywell, Dusit Thai, DLSU Lipa, Conception Carrier, Technological University of the Philippines, La Sallian Institute for the Environment, Manila Water, Toshiba Information, Philippine Epson Optical, JP Morgan Chase and Co., Energy Industries, Station East Commercial Corp., Mavirotek Enterprises, Analog Devises, Alabang Commercial Corp., and Thermal Solutions, Inc.

AEMAS Philippines (headed by Eng’r Ernesto J. Casis as Country Coordinator and assisted by Country Experts, Eng’r Jose A. Hilario and Eng’r Rolando C. Constantino) operates under the wing of the ENPAP headed by its President, Eng’r Bernard E. Pacia.  They plan to conduct 24 more training sessions over the next two years, with the aim of certifying 500 energy managers who are expected to form part of the backbone of the energy conservation efforts of the country. The next course shall be on June 13 – 15 at the Ortigas Center in Pasig City.

Additional information regarding the program may be sourced through the website, enpap_aemas@yahoo.com. Inquiries may also be directed to the ENPAP office located at Rm. 2110, V.V. Soliven Bldg., EDSA, through Fax (705 1556) or email (enpapsec@yahoo.com).

Another organization that has seriously set its sights on sustainable energy is the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) which will hold on May 26-28 their 10th National Mid-Year Convention in Boracay Ecovillage Resort and Convention Center.

The event’s organizer and host, PSME Panay Chapter have adopted the theme “Reinforcing the MEs on the new workplace challenges”, which is indicative of the recognition by the “Society’s” members of the need to retool the Mechanical Engineers to enable them to effectively cope with the “new workplace challenges” – particularly Climate Change. As such, Technical Paper presentations shall be made covering subject matter relevant to the perceived “new challenges”. Among them, Renewable Energy Power Plant, Clean Coal Power Plant, Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction, Strategic Planning /The New Workplace.

The key prime movers of the affair, VP Visayas Eng’r Ely P. Bagtasus, Convention Director and Panay Chapter President Eng’r Adrian N. Moncada, and Convention Asst Director and Aklan Chapter Past President Eng’r Juan Andante Jr, encourages all Mechanical Engineers from the Academe, LGUs, GOCCs, private practitioners, as well as those from the different key industries, to attend and actively participate in the convention. Apart from the retooling and learning benefits, various Boracay amenities await delegates.

The PSME, currently headed by its Nat’l President Eng’r Liberato S. Virata and Nat’l EVP Eng’r Rudy J. Sultan as well as the rest of the members of the National Board, looks forward to the full support that its 68 chapters will give to this mid-year event.

Inquiries regarding the convention can be sent to the PSME Panay Chapter by e-mail (psme_cpc@yahoo.com) or through Telephone (033 3380982 or 033 3382477). Reservations may also be communicated to Boracay Ecovillage Resort by e-mail (boracayecovillage@yahoo.com) or by Phone (036 288 34118).
